Learn lawfully

Use public routes, current weather information and competent supervision to learn ordinary map literacy, route planning and terrain awareness.

02 / 04

Do not confuse it with operational training

This resource does not teach covert movement, evasion or military fieldcraft. Civilian navigation is a practical outdoor education subject in its own right.

03 / 04

Choose ordinary outdoor education

Public map reading, route planning and responsible walking are legitimate civilian interests. Use publicly accessible routes and competent instruction; learn to check permissions, conditions and equipment. This is different from training in covert movement, evasion or military operational fieldcraft, none of which this website offers.

Risk decisions belong before departure

Weather, terrain, communications and the ability of the least experienced participant should affect a civilian outing. The route ought to be changed or cancelled when conditions exceed the group's capacity. A safe outdoor learning experience can build judgement without turning the countryside into an unofficial military selection ground.

APPLY IT

A practical source check

For a short, permitted daytime walk, ask a competent outdoor instructor to explain the public route, expected weather and how the group will know when to turn back. Never confuse the outing with UKSF instruction.
